Our Family, Your Jeweller
From mining in the Queensland gemfields to the Hay Street Mall workshop. Three generations of Grygs, one promise: honest advice and quality you can see.
Est. 1978
It Started With a Pick and a Hope
In the late 1960s, Joseph and Bessie Gryg travelled across Australia mining for precious gemstones and opals. Their journeys took them to Anakie, Sapphire, Emerald and Rubyvale in Queensland, searching for Australian sapphires. They mined black opals at Lightning Ridge and white opals at Coober Pedy and Andamooka.
Joseph taught himself to cut the stones they uncovered. When few jewellers were willing to work with them, especially the opals, he became a jeweller and gemmologist himself. He launched a wholesale business focused on manufacturing, repairs, and gemstone cutting for retail jewellers across Perth.
In July 1978, Allgem Jewellers officially opened its doors on William Street in the heart of Perth's CBD. By 1987 we had expanded into London Court Arcade. By 1997 we settled at 653 Hay Street Mall, where we remain today.
The Gryg Family
Three Generations Behind the Bench
Alfie Gryg
Owner, Master Jeweller & Registered Valuer
Completed his Diploma of Gemmology in 2005 and became a registered valuer in 2007. Alfie served as president of the Gemmological Association of Western Australia, just as his father did. He was also the official valuer for the WA Opal Hunters team on Outback Opal Hunters Seasons 1 and 2.
Brendan Gryg
Jeweller & Designer
Brendan joined the business full-time in 2015, learning the manufacturing process under the guidance of his father Alfie and grandfather Joseph. He now works as an in-house jeweller and designer, crafting custom pieces and managing restorations.
Jason Gryg
Jeweller & Designer
Jason also joined full-time in 2015 and works alongside Brendan as an in-house jeweller. He is known for his patience with clients, especially those commissioning custom engagement rings and remodelling family heirlooms.
Sarah Gryg
Showroom Manager & Social Media
Sarah manages the showroom floor and keeps the Allgem story alive online. If you have visited the store recently, she is likely the friendly face who greeted you.
Onsite Workshop
Everything Happens Under One Roof
Our showroom is at street level on Hay Street Mall. Directly below it sits a fully equipped workshop with multiple jewellers' benches and a gemmological laboratory.
This means your jewellery never leaves the premises. Custom designs are drafted, crafted, set, and polished by the same team you meet upstairs. Repairs are assessed, quoted, and completed on-site. Valuations are conducted in our secure workshop by a registered valuer.
We do not outsource to a factory overseas. We do not send your grandmother's ring to a third-party contractor. When you hand something to Allgem, it stays with Allgem.
Awards
Customer Service Award 2025
After being recognised as a finalist, Allgem Jewellers was announced the winner of the Customer Service Award at the 32nd Belmont & Western Australian Small Business Awards on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.
The award was presented by Ian Harrington and proudly sponsored by Storage King Perth Airport. It recognised not just our jewellery, but the way we treat every person who walks through the door.
We plan to remain committed to continually enhancing our customer service practices to better serve both current and future clients of Allgem Jewellers.
On Screen
Outback Opal Hunters
In 2018 and 2019, Alfie's gemmological expertise took centre stage as the official valuer for the WA Opal Hunters team featured in Seasons 1 and 2 of Outback Opal Hunters. His ability to identify, grade, and value Australian opals under pressure made him a natural fit for the show.
The same expertise he brought to television is what you get when you walk into our showroom.
Come In and Say Hello
With over 45 years in the jewellery industry and three generations behind the bench, we are confident the Allgem legacy will continue to sparkle for generations to come. We would love to welcome you into our store.
